Lakes, Forests and River Landscapes
Voyageurs National Park covers 218,000 acres in northern Minnesota, with lakes, forests and streams. The Grand Tour on Rainy Lake combines wildlife and landscape viewing with stories about the cultural and historical significance of the park. A tour of the gardens includes unique rock sculptures, dry-stacked terraces with flower beds, building remains and winding paths.
The canoe route network of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness covers more than 1,200 miles and runs across more than 1,000 lakes, rivers and streams connected by portages. Most lakes are designated as motor-free waters, where only paddle boats are permitted. This distinction is important for your planning if you are looking for peace and quiet on the water or want to combine your trip with several canoe passages.
The Mississippi begins its journey in Itasca State Park. Visitors can cross the source area via stepping stones, a footbridge or through shallow water. This makes the river's source one of the places where a vast landscape can be experienced directly and vividly.
On the shore of Lake Superior lies Picnic Flow, a well-exposed, solidified lava flow. In Gooseberry Falls State Park, the Waterfalls Walk leads to Middle Falls and Upper Falls. The Mississippi National River & Recreation Area combines hiking and cycling with gorges, waterfalls, historic mill districts and museums along a 72-mile corridor on the Mississippi.
Water Experiences with a Historical Connection
In Voyageurs National Park, the North Canoe Voyage is designed as an experience on the water. Costumed interpretive rangers turn it into a living history lesson.
History, Indigenous Traditions and Museums
Historic Fort Snelling is a National Historic Landmark on Bdote, the Dakota homeland, whose history spans 10,000 years. The site includes the Plank Museum & Visitor Center in a restored cavalry barracks dating from 1904. River overlooks, paved paths and exhibition areas complement the historic site.
At Historic Fort Snelling, visitors can explore independently with the assistance of interpretive staff. Short tours are also offered and included with admission. This provides different ways to orient yourself: You can view the site independently or include a compact tour as part of your visit.
In Minneapolis, the Mill City Museum tells the history of the flour industry. It is housed in the ruins of what was once the world's largest flour mill. At the Baking Lab, the offerings include exhibits on flour production, demonstrations and samples of freshly baked foods.
Pipestone National Monument preserves an Indigenous tradition of quarrying red stone for pipes that has existed for more than 3,000 years. These pipes are used in prayer and ceremonies; the tradition continues to this day.
Events and Landscapes on the Road
The Minnesota State Fair is an annual twelve-day event. It celebrates Minnesota's agriculture, art and industry and ends on Labor Day. The 322-acre Minnesota State Fairgrounds features a park-like setting, gardens and architecture from the Art Deco and Works Progress Administration eras.
Outside the annual State Fair, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds hosts more than 200 events each year. These include livestock shows, sporting competitions, auto shows and special events.
For a trip along Lake Superior, the North Shore All-American Scenic Drive connects several destinations. It runs from Duluth to Two Harbors along County Road 61, the former Highway 61, and from Two Harbors to Grand Portage along Highway 61.
