Raron: Hotels and Accommodations
Accommodation in Raron
Raron’s castle hill is home to St. Romanus Castle Church, the town’s new parish church. It was built between 1512 and 1518 around Ulrich Ruffiner’s old palas. On the southern side of the castle church lies the grave of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, which is visited by many admirers every year.
Culture and History
St. Michael’s Rock Church was completed in 1974 after three years of construction. Its interior was carved out of the rock inside the castle hill; the Church of St. Michael lies entirely within the rock and has 500 seats. Viztum Castle is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Romanesque secular architecture in Valais. It dates back to the 12th century and was first mentioned in 1268. From the 12th century onward, Raron Castle served as the seat of episcopal administrators.
