History and Culture

Monteforno is considered one of Ticino’s most important industrial companies and is linked to Bodio’s economic, industrial and human history. The name Monteforno comes from the 2,907-metre-high Pizzo Forno, which is visible to the north from Bodio. Extensive structures from the former industrial complex are still preserved, including an administrative building with eight huge columns.

The parish church of Santo Stefano is part of the local architectural and ecclesiastical history. It combines Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Baroque architectural elements. Its first documented mention dates back to 1227. In the 15th century, the church was destroyed by a landslide. The bell tower was built in 1776. The main building was extensively altered between 1856 and 1857, giving it its present appearance.
