Geographical location

The Leventina district comprises the Valle Leventina and Val Bedretto. The Valle Leventina stretches south from Airolo, near the Gotthard Pass, to Biasca and is crossed by the Ticino River.

Leventina is part of the Gotthard region and comprises upper, central and lower sections of the valley; the side valleys offer a variety of routes and landscapes. From north to south, the landscape ranges from coniferous forests and alpine conditions in the north to an almost Mediterranean southern plain where vines are grown. The Piottino and Biaschina gorges divide the region into these three sections.

Leventina has a historic north-south transit character shaped by the Gotthard Road, the Gotthard Railway and the A2 motorway. The southern portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is located in Bodio.

Culture and cuisine

Giornico is considered the best-preserved village in Leventina. The village centre features old stone houses and cobbled streets; two arched bridges cross the Ticino. The Leventina Museum is located in Casa Stanga. The Romanesque Church of San Nicola is known for its preserved frescoes.

Leventina is also associated with cheese, wine, cured meat, mushrooms and chestnuts, as well as traditional grotti and gourmet restaurants.
