Culture and History

Lichtensteig was first documented in 1228 as a fortified settlement of the Counts of Toggenburg under the name Liehtvnsteige. The history of the town is closely connected with Neu-Toggenburg Castle.

A church was built in Lichtensteig in 1435. From 1531 to 1967, Catholics and Protestants used the same church.
