Geographical Location

Buttes is a settlement in the municipality of Val-de-Travers in the canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The settlement extends through the valley of the Buttes stream and is geographically located in the depression of Val de Travers in the southwestern Neuchâtel Jura.

Landscape

The Vallon du Buttes has a broad, flat area on the lower valley floor and further upstream is deeply cut into the Jura highlands. In the immediate vicinity of Buttes lies Le Crêt Breny; in the surrounding area is Mont de Baulmes. In the wider regional area are Montagne de Boudry and Tablettes.

The former municipal territory included the Roches Blanches ridge; its highest point is 1,470 metres above sea level. The more extensive former municipal territory also included a densely forested southern slope that rises towards the Chasseron anticline. On the northern side, it extended as far as the anticline of Montagne de Buttes.

Culture and History

In the surrounding area of Buttes are Château de Joux and the Menhirs de Clendy. In the wider regional area around Buttes are also Château de Gorgier and Abbaye de Mont-Sainte-Marie.
