Promontogno lies at the foot of the Roman station Murus, also known as Porta or Müria, which is dated to around 250 AD. The linear village in Bergell has belonged to the municipality of Bregaglia since 2010.

Geographical classification
A rocky ridge near Promontogno divides Bergell into the two geographical and historical-political areas of Unterporta and Obporta. Promontogno is also the tourist centre of Unterporta.
Culture
Gneiss slabs for the roofs of Bergell houses were still being quarried in Promontogno at the beginning of the 21st century.
Near Promontogno are Cänt dal Gerl, Pizzo dei Vanni Orientale and Fort da Cengal. Cascate dell'Acquafraggia is located in the surrounding area. In the wider regional area are the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale, the Abbazia di San Pietro in Vallate and the Parco Adda Mallero Renato Bartesaghi.
