History and Culture
Samnaun is a Swiss duty-free area. This special status is connected to the historical trade relations with Tyrol. A direct connecting road to Switzerland was opened in 1912. Previously, there was no direct road through Swiss territory; this absence was cited in the historical rationale for Samnaun's duty-free status.
Another distinctive feature is its linguistic-geographical classification: Samnaun is the only municipality in Switzerland located within the Bavarian dialect area.
