Culture

The former district chancery in Trachselwald is now the Swiss Zither Cultural Centre. The Swiss Zither Cultural Centre is the only museum in Switzerland whose collection features every type of zither played in Switzerland. With 111 instruments, it documents more than 250 years of zither development and zither culture.

Trachselwald Castle was built by barons in the 12th and 13th centuries and designed for defence; until the 20th century, it served as a prison. Exhibitions and audio stations in the castle cover the Peasants’ War and the persecution of the Anabaptists. The keep of Trachselwald Castle can be visited free of charge and at your own risk.

Trachselwald Church acquired its present appearance after a complete renovation in 1686. Its sights include the ceiling painting from this renovation and May’s gravestone.

The Swiss Zither Cultural Centre offers public guided tours on Sundays accompanied by a concert. It also regularly presents temporary exhibitions, cultural events and concerts. The Simon Gfeller Foundation looks after the literary estate of Simon Gfeller. Simon Gfeller attended the former schoolhouse in Thal from 1875 to 1884; since 1970, it has housed the Simon Gfeller Memorial Room, which presents changing exhibitions. Readings by authors and other events take place at Kultur ir Chäsi.

Surroundings

Regional products from the Emmental include traditional Bernese sausages, local beer, pasta, cheese from the village dairy and fresh honey from the Emmental. 80 percent of the ingredients come from the Emmental.

In the Emmental, hiking trails lead over gentle hills and along panoramic high-altitude routes through scenic areas with farmhouses; the paths run through forests and meadows. Around and over the hills of the Emmental, there are more than 600 kilometres of signposted e-bike routes.

The Emmental Beer Trail comprises five stations where regional beers and suitable dishes are served. It begins in Sumiswald, leads over scenic hills and past Trachselwald Castle, and continues to Grünenmatt.
