Merligen lies on the right bank of Lake Thun, at the entrance to the Justistal valley. The settlement therefore combines a lakeside location with the transition into the valley.

Location and Surroundings

Bireflue is located in the immediate vicinity of Merligen. Gross-Schiffli, Morgenberghorn and Schöriz are situated in the surrounding area. The wider region also includes Brienz Wildlife Park.

Culture and Landscape

Merligen Church stands on a rocky promontory above Lake Thun and is considered a landmark of the municipality. Four large stained-glass windows are located on its south wall; the chancel wall is decorated with frescoes.

Hiking and Information

Merligen’s official tourist office is located directly on the Way of St. James. There you can obtain regional hiking maps and hiking suggestions. The office also provides timetable information and assistance with finding accommodation.

Merligen is served by STI bus route 21 and has a BLS boat landing stage on Lake Thun.
