Location and Landscape

Goldiwil lies on a sunny terrace above Thun. From this elevated terrace, views extend across Thun, the lake and the Alps. In the area between Goldiwil and Thun's Old Town, Rabeflue offers views over Thun and the surrounding area, the Stockhorn and the lower basin of Lake Thun.

The area known as “ob dem Wald” was associated with an agricultural way of life at around 1,000 metres in an almost alpine climate.

Hiking Trails and Connections

The hike to Niesenbänkli begins at Goldiwil, Kirche. The starting point can be reached by train to Thun and then by bus. From Schwanden, Dorf, the return journey by bus runs towards Oberhofen or Sigriswil; from there, further connections to Thun are available. The hike from Goldiwil to Niesenbänkli offers views of the Niesen, other peaks in the Bernese Oberland and Lake Thun.

The Goldiwil–Egg–Heiligenschwendi–Äschlenallmi–Schwanden route takes 3 hours and 10 minutes and covers 9.61 kilometres. The Rabeflue route follows signposted hiking trails. Another Rabeflue walk starts in Goldiwil, Dorf, passes Rabeflue and continues towards Thun railway station.

STI bus services connect Thun, Goldiwil and Heiligenschwendi.

History of Winter Sports

Before its incorporation into Thun in 1913, Goldiwil was effectively divided by Grüsisberg Forest into “ob dem Wald” and “nid dem Wald”. Goldiwil had officially been a winter sports resort since 1906. The first Swiss tobogganing championship was held here in 1907.

Goldiwil's historic winter sports facilities included a ski slope, a cross-country ski trail and a ski-jumping facility. In addition, a seven-kilometre route ran from Goldiwil village centre to Grabengut in Thun.
