Culture and History

The Reformed Church of Ligerz is a late Gothic landmark. The present building was constructed between 1522 and 1526 in the late Gothic style. A chapel dedicated to Saint Michael in Ligerz was first documented in 1261. The church is located on the Basel–Payerne Way of the Way of St. James and offers a pilgrim stamp.

Set amid the vineyards, the church faces St. Peter’s Island and offers views of the Alps. Guided tours in Ligerz explore the history of the village and the history of viticulture.

Wine and Landscape

Traditional and new organic grape varieties grow around Ligerz between the dry-stone walls. Around 30 wine-growing businesses shape the village; in addition, two professional fishermen live in Ligerz. Treberwurst, a local speciality, is available in the wine cellars.

Ligerz is one of the villages in the protected vineyard zone between Biel and La Neuveville, which was established in the 1930s. Nature-friendly viticulture around Ligerz goes hand in hand with sightings of birds, insects and reptiles in the vineyards.

Getting Around

A guided scooter descent leads from Prêles to Ligerz and is a way to explore the wine region on Lake Biel. Nearby, Prêles provides access to cycling and hiking routes on the Tessenberg and towards Chasseral.
