Geographical setting
The Vorderland district covers 46.41 km². Its elevation ranges from approximately 430 to 1,130 metres above sea level. Historically, Vorderland was separated from the rest of Appenzell Ausserrhoden by the Goldach Gorge.

A circular trail leads from Heiden via Ober Salen and the Kaien area to Kaienspitz, then returns to Heiden via the Health Trail.
