Local History and Highlights

The place name Gonten goes back to the 12th-century form “Gumbton,” which is associated with a body of water near a peat bog. In the Appenzell dialect, “Gonte” still means puddle today. Also associated with Gonten is the Flauder lemonade, which is bottled by Goba AG; the company was formerly called Mineralquelle Gontenbad.

Wildpark Peter und Paul, a zoo, is located roughly in the vicinity of Gonten’s town center. Also located roughly there are Säntis, a mountain, and the peaks Fälenschafberg, Hochhus, and Kreuzberg No. 4.
