Skiing at Laxfjället

At Laxfjället in Tärnaby, it is possible to ski off-piste. This means skiing in the mountain terrain outside a designated piste. This option contrasts with skiing on marked pistes and describes the use of the mountain terrain.

Competition with an international youth focus

Tärnaby and Tärna IK Fjällvinden have been responsible for the Ingemartrofén for many years. Alpine skiing is at the centre of this international alpine youth competition. Every year, between 200 and 300 young people come to Tärnaby. Young people from different countries meet in Tärnaby for the competition. The event is therefore a recurring meeting place for alpine youth sport. In addition to skiing at Laxfjället, this competition is also part of the town’s winter activities.

Hiking trail from the town into the mountains

From Tärnaby, a hiking trail to Geavhtavaartoe/Gäutafjället starts within walking distance. The trail begins in coniferous forest. It then passes through mountain birch forest before reaching alpine terrain. Mountain birch forest is the section characterised by mountain birches between the coniferous forest and the alpine zone. The starting point is therefore in the town, while the destination is in alpine terrain. From the starting point to the destination, the landscape changes twice: coniferous forest is followed by mountain birch forest, then by alpine terrain. The first section is therefore in the forest, while the final section is in the alpine area.

Laxfjället reaches 829 metres above sea level at its highest point. The summit can be reached via trails from several sides, so the ascent is not limited to a single direction. From the summit, there is a 360-degree panoramic view. The elevation figure refers to the highest point of the mountain. 829 metres indicates the summit elevation, not the length of a trail. The summit can be approached from several sides; the view there encompasses a complete 360-degree panorama.

Sámi Culture and History in Tärnaby

Aejlies in Tärnaby is a contemporary Sámi cultural institution that organises public programmes. The programmes are part of Tärnaby’s cultural offering and complement the winter and hiking activities described above. The cultural focus is therefore in Tärnaby. Aejlies complements the mountain and landscape themes with contemporary Sámi cultural work.

The present-day Tärna Church was inaugurated on 19 July 1908 by Bishop Olof Bergqvist. The church has an old altar arrangement made by local craftspeople from wood and soapstone. The altar arrangement thus represents local craftsmanship within the church. Both wood and soapstone are part of this item of church furnishing. Tärna Church is located in Tärnaby. From the church site, you can see Lake Gäutan and Ryfjället. The view therefore extends from the town to the lake and the mountain.
