Storuman: Ski Hotel, Cross-Country Ski Trails and Winter Trails
Accommodation in Storuman
At Storuman’s ski stadium, two illuminated cross-country ski trails begin, measuring four and six kilometres. In total, there are around 14 kilometres of prepared illuminated cross-country ski trails at Stenseleberget between Storuman and Stensele. Downhill skiing is also part of the winter offering: Umanbacken has three downhill runs, a lift and a children’s slope. In late winter, the winter trail along the Uman runs beside the lake’s ice edge and leads approximately 13 kilometres from Storuman towards Laisbäck.
Nature
Storuman Municipality combines mountain, forest and lake landscapes with opportunities for year-round outdoor activities in summer and winter. Along the shore of Luspviken, where the town of Storuman is located, the lakeside promenade runs partly along boardwalks through the forest. Kyrkstigen is easy to walk in summer, partly laid with boardwalks and six kilometres long; it leads from Storuman to Stensele Church but is not accessible. A simple walking trail on the north side of Gunnarbäcken is also well suited to cross-country cycling.
The bathing area has a diving tower, seating, an approximately one-kilometre circular route, beach volleyball, disc golf, an outdoor gym, a boules court and an accessible ramp.
In Storuman Municipality, more than 2,400 lakes and the Ume River offer numerous opportunities for fishing all year round. In Storuman Lapland, you can fish independently or hire a fishing guide. The old bridge at Stensele, on the former route of Vilhelminavägen, is a birdwatching site on the Ume River and is particularly worth stopping at from April to May.
In the immediate vicinity of Storuman are the three easily accessible viewpoints Kyrkberget, Forsviksberget and Utsikten. Maps and information are available, and a guided tour is offered through the hotel. Naturum Vindelfjällen in Hemavan provides information about hiking trails, guided tours, exhibitions, maps and souvenirs. Drottningleden is a nine-kilometre-long, relatively easy hiking trail between Laisaliden and Hemavan, with views of Norwegian peaks and glaciers.
Culture and History
Stensele Church is one of Sweden’s largest wooden churches and is known as the “Cathedral of Lappmarken”. Atoklimpen is a Sámi cultural landscape that shows how nomadic reindeer-herding communities have used the landscape from prehistoric times to the present day. There is a nearly nine-kilometre circular trail with several information boards, as well as an accessible rest area at Atostugan by Risbäcken.
The Järnvägshotellet in Storuman is the best-preserved railway hotel in the district. The façades facing the railway grounds still correspond to their 1930s appearance, and the building was converted into a library in 1979. The dining rooms, staircase hall and corridors of the former railway hotel remain unchanged; some furniture from the hotel era is also still there. A guided tour of the building can be booked, or its history can be explored independently using written information.
Hembygdsgården on Luspholmarna includes a museum with older local objects, as well as historic buildings maintained by the local heritage association. The museum in Umnäs presents Sámi culture and settler culture, a school museum exhibition and old photographs. It is located in the village’s old school, built in 1905, and mainly displays objects from the surrounding area.
There is a seasonal fika offering in a special setting featuring locally produced items, including toffee and toffee sauce. It is open in summer and at certain times during winter.
