Discover Skåne: accommodation between coast, nature and culture

Skåne combines cliffs that drop steeply into the sea and expansive beaches with lush green forests in central Skåne, as well as forest and lake landscapes in the north. Between coastal landscapes, historic sites, museums and long hiking trails, the region presents a diverse picture.

Nature

At Stenshuvud, the highest peak is 97 metres high. From there, the view extends across Hanö Bay; on clear days, Bornholm is visible. Stenshuvud National Park combines coastal hills, deciduous forest, heathland and beaches. Trails lead to viewpoints overlooking the sea. Naturum Stenshuvud, the national park’s visitor centre, is located at the main entrance. It features an exhibition about the park, and staff are also available to answer questions.

At Kullaberg, diving, snorkelling and kayaking are possible along the coast. Marked trails lead from the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula towards Arild or Mölle through lush deciduous forests and flower-rich pastures. The waters around Kullaberg are home to harbour porpoises, which can be observed from the cliffs. The Hallands Väderö nature reserve has breeding grounds for seabirds; grey seals are often seen on the rocks along the shores.

Trails

The Skåneleden runs throughout Skåne. The hiking system is 1,600 kilometres long and comprises six sub-trails with a total of 113 sections. The trails are marked with orange signs. Hikes in the forests around Hovdala at Lake Finjasjön can be started from Hässleholm Central Station; the station is accessible by bus or train.

Access details are also documented for other sites: Sofiero Palace and its gardens can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by car or by bus. Bus route 518 stops at both entrances to Söderåsen National Park.

Culture

Skissernas Museum houses the world’s largest collection of sketches and preparatory work for public art. Every week, the museum offers public guided tours of the temporary exhibition and the collection. The tours are held in Swedish and English and are included in the admission price. Kulturen in Lund is an open-air museum with historic houses and gardens, as well as around twenty exhibitions on local and global culture. Wanås Konst combines a sculpture park with an art experience and displays more than 50 permanent works by international contemporary artists, as well as additional guest exhibitions.

Bosjökloster combines 900 years of history with exhibitions in the castle and outbuildings, gardens in a natural setting by Lake Ringsjön, and a park that includes animal enclosures and a thousand-year-old oak tree. Glimmingehus can be explored on guided tours or independently. The rooms feature sensor-controlled information panels and a digital guidebook. The grounds also include the museum, Café Borggården and a visitor shop. The east wing, known as the Roaster’s House, hosts workshops on medieval crafts and public activities.

The exhibitions at Fredriksdal cover nature, animals, culture and art. Theatre performances and walking performances are also offered there. Every year, Fredriksdal organises several types of courses and lectures, including courses on restoring historic windows, traditional garden maintenance and cooking. Teknikens och sjöfartens hus presents exhibitions on the history of science, the sea, shipping, vehicles and watercraft. The building also includes the Wisdome visualisation centre with a dome cinema presentation.

History

The Tycho Brahe memorial sites on Ven include the archaeological remains of Uranienborg Castle and the Stjärneborg observatory, Uranienborg’s reconstructed Renaissance garden, and All Saints’ Church. Trelleborgen is a partial reconstruction of the former Viking fortress that the Viking king Harald Bluetooth had built at this site in the 10th century; the town of Trelleborg was named after it.

Ales stenar is an Iron Age stone formation consisting of 59 large stone blocks. The stones were arranged in the shape of a 67-metre-long ship and date approximately from 500 to 1000 AD.

Culinary specialities

Spettekaka is made from dough that is drizzled onto a rotating wooden spit. Traditionally, the cake was baked over an open fire; today, it is prepared in special rotating ovens.
