Halland: Cross-country skiing, coast and culture

In Åkulla bokskogar, there are opportunities for cross-country skiing in winter, while several bathing spots are added in summer. Åkulla bokskogar is the collective name for around ten similar nature reserves in a contiguous area of Varberg Municipality. They include 20 lakes, which together account for about one-fifth of the area, as well as nine largely interconnected walking trails.

Nature

The Toppbjär reserve in Åkulla is home to the “Bexell's talking stones”: inscriptions carved into rocks and cliffs. The Haverdal nature reserve lies in a coastal dune landscape where swimming, walking, jogging and horse riding are possible. Hökafältet has a 2.5-kilometre trail that is particularly suitable for wheelchairs, walkers and prams. A bird-watching tower stands in the northern part of Hökafältet at Lagaoset.

The coastal plain of Halland features long sandy beaches with dunes extending as far north as the northern parts of Halmstad Municipality. Farther north, the coast becomes more varied and includes coastal meadows, cliffs, skerries and bays. Halland's eastern forest region consists of naturally occurring coniferous and mixed forests, as well as open bog areas with a pronounced wilderness character.

Culture

Äskhult has four historic trails of varying lengths, with stations highlighting the history and cultural landscape of the area. The events programme includes themed walks, Midsummer celebrations, a children's day, a harvest festival, a storytelling café and a Christmas market.

Tjolöholms slott was designed in the Tudor style with influences from the Arts and Crafts movement. The cultural landscape includes numerous stone-paved walking trails. Tjolöholms slott is also a cultural and historical setting unique in Sweden.

The Hallands Konstmuseum in Halmstad presents several exhibitions running in parallel, often based on its extensive collection of art from Halland. The collection includes, among other things, painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, handicrafts and architecture. The museum offers family activities such as family storytelling, challenging art puzzles and free-form creative work in the studio. Varberg Fortress has been gradually transformed into a place for cultural experiences and beautiful views.

Out and about

The signposted Hallandsleden currently runs for approximately 450 kilometres through the inland areas of Halland. The eastern and western routes meet again in the Åkulla area. The route and division into sections are closely coordinated with public transport, making it easier to travel to and from the trail. Hallandsleden passes through landscapes with old transport routes, ancient monuments, historic buildings and signposted attractions.

Stättareds 4H-gård is a starting point for numerous walking trails. At Stora Hornsjön, the farm rents out canoes and a rowing boat. For cyclists, Kattegattleden runs through a distinctive coastal landscape and offers 390 kilometres of cycling. It is Sweden's first national cycle route.

Recreation

Ästad Vingård offers tastings of organically produced wines from Halland. The ÄNG restaurant next to Ästad Vingård serves a Scandinavian tasting menu focusing on locally sourced ingredients. Sinnenas Spa offers day visits with refreshing baths and sauna sessions.
