Tržič: Historic Old Town, Crafts and Trails – Find a Ski Hotel

Tržič combines an old town fully protected as a cultural monument with a craft tradition that included ironworking, wagon-making, textile and leather processing, and, above all, shoemaking. Among the preserved buildings, museums, and paths through the historic centre, this character can be experienced in several places.

Culture and Crafts

The Tržič Museum is housed in the former Pollak dye works and tannery in the town’s old blacksmithing and crafts district. Preserved water channels can be seen alongside the building. Fužina Germovka is considered the best-preserved smithy in Tržič. Another connection to the town’s local trade history is the “Tržiški šuštarji” exhibition at the Tržič Museum, which is considered the most extensive shoemaking collection in Slovenia.

The Kurnik House combines rural and small-town architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries and the first half of the 20th century. Its features include a brick ground floor, a wooden upper floor, a shingle roof, a black kitchen, and drying openings in the roof. The Slovenian Ski Museum is a department of the Tržič Museum and is located in the Pollak House. Its exhibition explores the development of skiing from its prehistoric beginnings as a means of transport to modern ski champions.

Trails through the Town

The Museum Detective Trail leads through Tržič’s old town to Neuhaus Castle. Another route is called “Sledi industrije” and leads to historic shoemaking sites throughout the historic centre using metal shoeprints. The trail is approximately 2 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half, including short breaks.

The walk from Tržič town centre to St Joseph’s Church takes just over ten minutes. The route offers a view of Tržič’s historic district. Kamnek can be reached from the historic town centre via an easy route that takes about an hour.

Surrounding Area

Since spring 2014, a nature trail has led through the Blata wetland in the surrounding area. It includes 11 observation points. Dovžanova soteska is also protected as a natural monument in the surrounding area. A scenic nature trail also leads through Dovžanova soteska near the town.

In the surrounding area, visitors can explore the fully preserved, five-kilometre-long Šentanski rudnik cave system on a guided tour through Antonov rov on the fifth level.

Regional Cuisine and Events

Tržič’s culinary specialities include Tržiške bržole, a stew made from mutton or sheep meat. The town’s restaurants prepare selected traditional dishes from Tržič in a modern style. A regular fixture in the annual calendar is Šuštarska nedelja, which takes place on the first Sunday in September.
