In Šmarje Pri Jelšah, the Museum of Baroque preserves and displays 43 original wooden sculptures from the chapels of Šmarje Calvary, along with other Baroque furnishings from the chapels and the Church of St. Roch. Using multimedia technology, the museum also presents other Baroque monuments from Obsotelje and Kozjansko.

The Church of St. Roch is considered one of Slovenia’s outstanding art monuments. It features the architectural language of the 17th century, with a presbytery, a slightly wider nave, and a bell tower. The frescoes in the presbytery predominantly depict scenes from the legend of Saint Roch, as well as apostles and Church Fathers.

Jelšingrad was surrounded by a park; allegorical figures representing the four seasons stood at the edge of the courtyard. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Jelšingrad was redesigned in the Oriental style and subsequently came to be regarded as one of the most beautiful castle buildings in Štajerska.

Pilgrimage

The Calvary is a stone path, partly fitted with steps, that leads up the northern slope in a zigzag pattern to the Church of St. Roch. There are 14 chapels along the path. The fourteenth chapel contains the Holy Staircase and a Holy Sepulchre; its stairway has 30 steps.

Every year, on 15 August, the feast day of the parish patroness, the Assumption of Mary, and on 16 August, the feast day of Saint Roch, a traditional pilgrimage gathering takes place, attended by more than 1,000 people.

History

The parish church of Šmarje pri Jelšah is considered the oldest building in the town and was first mentioned in written sources in 1236. Its bell tower contains 400-year-old frescoes that were discovered during restoration work. In 1878, the parish church was expanded and supplemented with a northern and a southern chapel.
