Ribnica: Crafts, Castle Culture and Trails through the Valley

Ribnica is known for a centuries-old tradition of making wooden and pottery products. One of Slovenia’s best-known fairs is dedicated to this tradition and held there. In the town, a craft heritage, historic spaces and contemporary art come together with trails through the Ribnica Valley and the surrounding area.

Culture

The Church of St Stephen houses the original mechanical organ built by Franc Goršič in 1874. They are among the largest mechanical organs in Slovenia. The church’s main altar is also noteworthy: it was created by Ivan Grohar.

The Rokodelski Center Ribnica presents the local craft tradition on several levels. Visitors can watch demonstrations of traditional woodworking and pottery production there. By prior arrangement, they can also take part in craft workshops and make their own craft item under the guidance of an experienced artisan. One exhibition is dedicated to the contemporary production of wooden and pottery products, as well as other local crafts.

The centre’s permanent exhibitions include “Suha roba in lončarstvo”, “Ribnica, veličina majhnosti” and “Boj krvavi zoper čarovniško zalego”. In 2022, the permanent exhibition “Suhorobarstvo & Lončarstvo” received the Valvasor Award for outstanding achievements in museology.

The Miklova hiša Gallery primarily presents contemporary Slovenian visual art and preserves two of its own art collections.

History

Ribnica Castle combines historic substance with public spaces that are still in use. Two restored towers are connected by a new passageway. The complex also includes an open-air theatre, which continues to serve as a venue for outdoor events. The Ribnica Museum has been housed in the restored rooms of the castle since 1961.

The Park kulturnikov is located by the castle. It was established in 1982 with memorial markers commemorating 65 distinguished people from Ribnica.

Nature and Trails

Visitors can rent bicycles and use a collection of cycling routes through the Ribnica Valley. The Ricikel bicycle rental system provides around eight conventional bicycles in Ribnica and is available to all users in the municipality around the clock.
