Oplotnica: Graščina, Črna kuhinja and nature trail
Next to a small park in the center of Oplotnica stands Graščina Oplotnica, also known as Žički dvorec. The other features that bear witness to the town range from a distinctive architectural history and everyday culture to local traditions and paths along the water.
Culture
At the beginning of the 17th century, Graščina Oplotnica was built by Carthusian monks from Žička kartuzija. It is a monument to rural splendour with remarkable stucco work. Its features include a chapel decorated with stucco, located behind a wrought-iron partition. Graščina can be visited during opening hours; groups should register in advance with TIC Oplotnica. There are different points to note regarding visits: Graščina is subject to opening hours, while groups must register in advance with TIC Oplotnica.
The Črna kuhinja, an ethnological museum, stands by St. Barbara's Church. The Črna kuhinja can be visited by prior arrangement with TIC Oplotnica. A washhouse can also be visited in Oplotnica; there, washing as it was done in the past is demonstrated. Alongside the prestigious Graščina, you can therefore encounter places where everyday life in earlier times is made visible. The cultural attractions differ in their traditional and presented functions: at Graščina, the building and its furnishings are the focus; at the Črna kuhinja, the ethnological museum perspective; and at the washhouse, the demonstration of washing as it was done in the past.
A local legend connects Oplotnica with a sunken “White City” and the surviving pagan statues of Jupiter and Mithras. The tourist experience “Grajska dama” offers insights into life at Graščina and the history of Oplotnica through a historical costume. The legend and the experience emphasise different aspects: the former a traditional tale, the latter the history of the town as it is presented.
Nature
The Oplotniški vintgar nature trail is characterised by a succession of wooden stairs, small bridges and forest paths. It leads above and alongside the glistening water. The Oplotnica stream also points to an earlier use: until just over 30 years ago, it powered at least 30 mills and sawmills. The trail description combines the form of the path with the course of the waterway: wooden stairs, bridges and forest paths are part of the site described, as are the route above and alongside the water. The history of the mills adds a time-limited reference to the stream's former use to this description.
