A marked route leads from Gornji Grad via Semprimožnik to Dom na Menini planini. Menina Planina is also home to its highest point, Vivodnik: it reaches 1,508 metres, and an observation tower stands there.
Nature and Trails
Several trails provide access to the area around Gornji Grad, with clearly named destinations. The Gornji Grad–Sv. Lenart–Veliki Rogatec mountain trail begins in Gornji Grad and ends at Veliki Rogatec. The route is 9.12 kilometres long; one way takes 4 hours and 15 minutes.
A 2.4-kilometre trail leads from the TIC to Počrevinov grič, with a stated duration of one hour. The trail reaches Počrevinov grič, which has a viewpoint offering views of the whole of Gornji Grad.
The Attems Trail is a 2.4-kilometre circular route with a duration of 45 minutes. It leads from the TIC via Spodnji trg and Podsmrečje back to the TIC. Along the way, it presents the history of Gornji Grad's town centre and passes, among other places, the cathedral and a museum in the former defensive tower.
Another connection with a spiritual character is the 7-kilometre pilgrimage route between the Cathedral of St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus in Gornji Grad and the Church of Marija Zvezda in Nova Štifta.
Culture
The town's defining building is the Cathedral of St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus. Measured by volume, it is the largest cathedral in Slovenia. The building is a late Baroque former monastery church and now serves as the parish church of Gornji Grad. Its elaborately designed interior includes numerous paintings, frescoes, vaults and stone sculptures.
Štekl houses gallery spaces on the ground floor, while the upper floors contain museum collections. Prior arrangement is required to visit the museum collections of Gornji Grad.
Special features of the Janez Mavrič Collection include Zadrečka ceramics and Kokarski hats. The Janez Mavrič Collection is designated as a cultural monument of local importance.
At the Herbal Village, visitors can take part in a workshop about traditional herbs. The focus is on their significance and use, as well as the stories and tales associated with them.
