Horný Smokovec serves as a starting point for hikes and as an accommodation base. The village is also a stop on the Tatranská elektrická železnica (TEŽ). On the northern side of the railway line in Horný Smokovec is the Meniareň prúdu Horný Smokovec traction power substation. It is now used as a traction power substation of the TEŽ and has been designated a cultural monument since 2010.

The VT17 Okolo Smokovcov trail is described as an easy walking route with little elevation gain. In Horný Smokovec, the Intersport GALFY branch rents bicycles, e-bikes, outdoor equipment, ski touring equipment and skiing equipment.

In the immediate surroundings of Horný Smokovec are Veža, Slovkovská nos, Malý Kostol and Slavkovský štít; all four are mountains. Votrubova Chata, a historic site, is also located nearby. The Wooden Articular Church in Kežmarok, a church, is likewise in the surrounding area. Culture
The local cultural history includes the building complex that was designated as the new settlement of Horný Smokovec in 1930. In the 1930s, the larger Helios guesthouse and two well-equipped climatotherapeutic sanatoriums were built in Horný Smokovec: the Dr. Jána Opatrného Sanatorium from 1930 and the Dr. Júliusa Holzmanna-Horného Sanatorium from 1935. Both now serve as children's medical clinics.
The western part of the present-day settlement also has an older history. In an area called Pekná vyhliadka, a wooden observation tower and a popular walking path leading to it stood there in the 1870s. The Tatranská galéria displays works by important painters inspired by the beauty of the Tatra Mountains.
