Smrečany: Winter Activities, Churches and Hrádok

Smrečany offers numerous routes and trails for hiking, cycling, skiing, ski mountaineering and agrotourism, enabling sporting activities in both summer and winter. Paths and Activities

The Green Zone along the Smrečianka offers a walk with stops at information boards. The boards also direct visitors to the village museum, churches and monuments. The walk through the Green Zone can be extended to the memorial to the victims of the Second World War battles on Háj-Nicovom. Winter paths and cultural stops are presented here as separate themes, while the routes mentioned provide access to further sporting activities.

Culture and History

The Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity in Smrečany was completed in 1880. It has a 25-metre-high tower and three bells. At the entrance to the grounds of the Evangelical Church in Smrečany stands a memorial to those who fell in the First World War. It names 29 men from Smrečany who died.

The Church of the Presentation of the Lord is a national cultural monument. It preserves Gothic tracery windows as well as Gothic wall paintings and frescoes. A painted wooden ceiling has also been preserved in the nave. For visits outside services, you must arrange an appointment and guided tour in advance.

The Aristid Smrečiansky Manor House was originally built around 1750 in the Rococo style. Around 1810, its façade was altered in the Neoclassical style, and it retains its original entrance gate with wooden doors.

Hrádok is a spur terrace north of the Gothic church of Smrečany; an embankment has been preserved on its western side. The ancient hillfort is considered one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Liptov. The origins of Hrádok date back to the Hallstatt period, from the 6th to the 4th century BC.

The Pamätná izba Smrečany preserves objects and documents relating to Smrečany’s more than seven-hundred-year history and the way of life of its inhabitants. Traditional wooden tools and original local clothing are on display there. Visitors can browse and read various editions of the works Jano and Stretutie while sitting at old school desks. An amateur theatre tradition continues in Smrečany to this day.
