Lom: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Lom
Lom is a natural gateway to Jotunheimen National Park. When planning your visit, consider whether day hikes, geology and climate, or historical sights are most important to you.
Hiking and High-Mountain Knowledge in Lom
Norsk fjellsenter is an authorised visitor centre for Jotunheimen National Park. At Norsk fjellsenterâs Fjellviten centre, visitors can learn about the geology and climate of the high mountains through playful activities. Lom therefore offers both orientation for visiting the national park and a focus on the landscape and high mountains.
Marked hiking trails lead in various directions directly from the centre of Lom. Bergomsrunda is an easy circular trail of about 2.5 kilometres in the centre of Lom. Its approximate length and easy rating provide clear guidance when planning a walk around the town.
Another option is the hike up Lomseggen, which starts in the centre and follows a circular route via Smith-bue and the Kvilarsteinen viewpoint. You can follow the route by using these named stops as reference points. The trail called âOlasvsrĂ„ketâ continues from Tronodberget, following in the footsteps of Saint Olav.
The Dagsturhytta in Garmo is designated as a family-friendly hiking destination; the cabin is open to everyone year-round. It is a separate option for a day hike, and its location differs from that of the trails that start directly in the centre of Lom.
Stave Church, Open-Air Museum and Local History
Lom Stave Church was built around 1158 and is protected as a heritage site. For a different perspective on building methods and historical interiors, visit Lom Bygdamuseum, an open-air museum in Presthaugen, 300 metres from the centre of Fossbergom. Its 22 preserved buildings illustrate construction methods and indoor and outdoor spaces from 1613 to 1900.
Fossbergom, the centre of Lom, is one of five settlements in Norway with National Park Village status. At Lom Bygdamuseum, the seasonal programme âOnsdager i Presthaugenâ showcases traditional crafts, including butter-making, baking lefse, spinning and woodworking. Dates may vary; check them when planning your visit.
Brewery, Cycling and Seasonal Road Planning
Lom bryggeri produces Lomb Lager beer in Grjotheim in Lom. The brewery aims to source its ingredients as locally as possible and to draw on local history and geography. A visit includes stories about the breweryâs history, a tour of the brewery and a beer tasting. This adds an insight into local beer production to the hiking and cultural experiences.
Sognefjellsvegen runs between Lom and Gaupne. When cycling along the road, youâll encounter sections with gradients of up to 16 per cent. This maximum applies to individual sections, not the entire route. For travellers planning to cycle, it provides a specific indication of the gradients.
Further afield in the region, the mountain section of Sognefjellsvegen between RustasĂŠtre/Vegaskjelet and TurtagrĂž is normally closed for winter from November to May. This information applies to the named section across the mountains. Check the current road status before setting off.
