Stranda combines trails in town and in wooded terrain with a church in the centre. The Stranda Ski Resort is also nearby, and courses in ski touring and freeriding are offered in Stranda.

Trails in Stranda

Elvastien is an easy, accessible trail in the centre of Stranda that is suitable for all age groups. It is 0.55 km each way, has an elevation gain of 7 metres and takes approximately 20 minutes. The trail is lit on dark evenings and can also be walked in the evening. Its length, elevation gain and approximate duration give you concrete guidance when you want to plan a short walk during your stay.

A longer hiking option is Barlia og Skaffarhaugen. The route starts at Stranda Stadium and runs for about one kilometre each way through wooded terrain above the residential area. It passes through a protected recreational area. A detour follows a path to the summit of Skaffarhaugen, where there is a viewpoint looking north towards the fjord. The length of the detour is not included in the route’s approximate distance.

Church and townscape

Stranda Church, also known as Sløgstad Church, is located right in the centre. The octagonal wooden church dates from 1838 and was consecrated on 30 September. Its altarpiece probably dates from around 1500. This gives Stranda a specific cultural landmark in addition to its trails. If you are interested in church architecture or historic furnishings, you can take these aspects into account when planning your visit.

Ski resort and winter courses

Near Stranda, the Stranda Ski Resort has seven ski lifts, a conveyor lift, a children’s park, a terrain park and 18 downhill runs. The children’s park and terrain park are distinct named areas; the number of runs alone does not indicate their level of difficulty.

Uteguiden offers courses in Stranda for people with different levels of experience. The basic ski touring course is particularly aimed at skiers with little experience in alpine ski touring. The advanced ski touring course lasts three days and covers avalanche awareness, tour planning, equipment and safe route planning. The courses therefore differ in both the experience required and their scope and content.

The freeride courses also have different areas of focus. The basic course teaches techniques for loose snow and avalanche awareness. The advanced course is for people who have completed the basic course, as well as experienced off-piste skiers with basic technique. Here, freeride means skiing away from groomed pistes; the course descriptions can help you choose an option suited to your previous experience.

Bus or car are listed as options for travelling from Ålesund Airport Vigra or Hovden in Ørsta to Strandafjellet. This information concerns the journey from the airports to Strandafjellet; no travel time is specified. Nearby, Stova opened in November 2021, having been established in 1957. The building has a ticket office, ski service, ski rental, a restaurant and a café. The summer ball court near the Stranda Ski Resort is also turned into an ice rink in winter.
