Discover Kvam through a range of experiences: Steinsdalsfossen, fjord trips from Norheimsund and Øystese, cultural attractions, farm experiences and hikes. When looking for hotels in Kvam, it may help to first decide which activities you want to shape your stay. Fjord trips have different departure points and conditions; if you have a specific trip in mind, check the applicable information.

Waterfall and hikes

Steinsdalsfossen has a drop of 50 metres. Visitors can walk behind the waterfall without getting wet—a special feature of the visit. There is a car park at the waterfall for cars, motorhomes and caravans. As parking rules may change operationally, check the latest information before your visit.

The hike to Krokavatnet is 2.3 kilometres long and takes about 1.5 hours each way. The route is easily accessible and offers views of the Hardangerfjord. The stated time is each way, so bear in mind that it does not cover the round trip.

From Kiellandbu, you can enjoy views of fjords, mountains and glaciers, including the Hardangerfjord and Folgefonna. Breidablik in the Kvammafjella mountains lies high above Fitjadalen. Good trails lead there from the fjord, from the mountains and from other cabins.

Fjord trips from Norheimsund and Øystese

The Hardangerfjord and Fyksesund Fjord Safari runs from Norheimsund into Fyksesund. The trip includes short stops for taking photos and stories about nature, culture and life along the Hardangerfjord. The Norheimsund RIB Seafari follows a different route: it crosses the Hardangerfjord and travels through the ten-kilometre-long Fyksesund to Botnen. It departs from the guest harbour in Norheimsund, 150 metres from the bus terminal. You can distinguish between the tours by their specific highlights and routes. RIB Seafari departure arrangements may change.

Another Fyksesund RIB Fjord Safari departs from Øystese and heads into Fyksesund. It is the only fjord branch in Hardanger without a continuous road all the way to its innermost area. The tour operates seasonally; check the route and season before travelling.

At the Hardanger Akvasenter, the tour begins with a visit to the interactive exhibition “Det er her vi bur”. You then travel by RIB to the site of an operational salmon farm in the fjord. Schedules vary by season and the tour is subject to booking; check the tour details and reservation options if this experience is important to your plans.

Culture and water in Øystese

Kunsthuset Kabuso presents changing exhibitions, concerts and events throughout the year. Also in Øystese is the Ingebrigt Vik Museum, which houses the collection of one of Norway’s most prominent sculptors. Hardanger Skyspace is a light installation by American artist James Turrell, right on the fjord shore in Øystese. The three experiences offer different highlights: changing art and events, a sculpture collection, or an installation by the shore.

Hardangerbadet has a 25-metre pool as well as a family pool and a therapy pool. Its facilities also include indoor bathing areas, a water park and a water slide. The swimming centre is another activity to consider when planning your stay.

Farm life and local products

Spildegarden in Øystese is a fourth-generation family farm. It grows fruit and berries and also produces apple juice and cider. Breievne Gard has a farm café and sells its own products as well as processed specialities. Its offerings also include glamping, walks to cultural heritage sites, product tastings and locally themed events. Seasonal serving details at the farm café may change; check them before planning a visit.

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Kvam, the activities described can provide a practical starting point for planning your trip. For a fjord trip, the departure point and any seasonal or booking conditions for that particular offering are important. For the hike to Krokavatnet, take note of the stated duration each way.
