Museums, History and Unique Perspectives
The Lietuvos etnokosmologijos muziejus (Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology) brings together astronomy, ethnic culture and the relationship between people and the cosmos. Utenos dvaras preserves the manor’s red-brick buildings, outbuildings and gardens. Those interested in local history and contemporary life in the region can explore the extensive collection at the Utenos kraštotyros muziejus (Utena Museum of Local History). Intelligent technologies allow visitors to explore Utena’s past and present. Two halls are devoted to temporary exhibitions, with something new to see every month. The museum also organises educational activities and cultural events.
The Visagino miesto muziejus (Visaginas City Museum) offers a different perspective on local history: its exhibition explores stories about Visaginas’s identity, shaped by nuclear energy. Visitors can try operating a scale simulator of the control room at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. In the ethnographic village of Vaišnoriškės, visitors can see two reconstructed traditional-style homes, a barn, two stables and saunas. At the Gaidelių homestead, an educational demonstration on preparing traditional Aukštaitian fish soup is offered.
Parks, Water and Trails
Dauniškis Park in Utena has numerous walking paths and benches. The park also features a pontoon bridge, several playgrounds, beaches and free Wi-Fi. If you’re travelling with children, you can include the playgrounds in your day’s plans as one of the park’s specific amenities. The fountain in the park operates from late spring to early autumn, with daytime and evening programmes.
At Lake Zarasas, the observation wheel offers panoramic views from a height of 17 metres. Its ring-shaped design has a diameter of 34 metres. Around the wheel, there is a lakeside walking path and opportunities to explore the area by boat or bicycle. These provide additional ways to experience the surroundings beyond the view from the observation wheel, without requiring a particular circular route.
For longer walks, two very different perspectives on the landscape stand out: the Šventoji Spring Trail is 10 km long and ends with a self-operated pontoon crossing at the narrowest point of Antalieptė Reservoir. The treetop walkway in Anykščiai Regional Park is the first of its kind in the Baltics and runs 20 metres above the ground.
