San Michele Arcangelo and the Sacred Heritage
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Savelli is central to the historical record. It was built as a Benedictine monk’s cell and was directly subordinate to Santa Maria di Farfa Abbey. Its simple façade with a gabled roof, the single entrance portal and the two quatrefoil oculi, together with the adjacent bell tower, shape the appearance of the building.
The church contains an altar dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario. The sculpture Madonna adorante il Bambino also comes from San Michele Arcangelo. It is attributed to an unknown sculptor who probably came from Valnerina and was active in the first half of the 16th century.
Next to San Michele Arcangelo is a small oratory. It was built by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament in Savelli; this confraternity was founded at the end of the 15th century.
Historic Traces in the Village and Its Surroundings
Savelli is documented in records of Farfa Abbey shortly after the year 1000. The abbey owned land there.
Traces of earlier settlement have also been identified east of San Michele Arcangelo. Roman stone elements dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD were found at the foot of an embankment. Archaeological finds have also been made in Savelli. An archaeological settlement site is also located near Savelli-Castellano.
Paths, Roads and Rural Character
A historic path runs between Valcaldara and Savelli. The historic route therefore complements the architectural heritage with a concrete connection to the area around Savelli. There is also a newer secondary road connection between Savelli and San Marco.
The main road through Savelli continues to the former border area between the Papal States and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. This refers to a historic border; it does not mean a present-day political border. Together with the historic settlement structure and the farmland, this creates a village landscape in which history, transport routes and rural character are closely interwoven.
