Historic sites in Silandro

Two large marble menhirs, discovered in Vezzano in 2012, were given a place in the old chapel of Schlandersburg after extensive archaeological investigations. The library of Schlandersburg in Silandro also houses a permanent exhibition about the menhirs of Vezzano. The entrance area of the Schlandersburg library preserves the remains of a residential tower built in the 13th century.

The Capuchin monastery and the Capuchin church in Silandro were built in 1644. In 1235, Emperor Frederick II gave the parish of Silandro to the Teutonic Order. The parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was rebuilt in the Gothic style after being looted by the Engadin forces in 1499 and was reconsecrated in 1505. The Teutonic Order’s commandery is located in the immediate vicinity of the parish church of Silandro and can be recognised by its distinctive entrance gate bearing the cross of the Teutonic Order.

The present-day building of Freienturm was constructed around 1720–1730. Freienturm is an old Romanesque residential tower from the Middle Ages that was converted into a manor house with valuable architectural details. Around 1600, Schlandersburg was converted into a Renaissance castle by the Counts of Hendl. Its distinctive features include the two-storey loggias with closely spaced round columns and the fireplaces decorated with sgraffito.

Schlandersberg Castle was built in the 13th century at an altitude of 1,050 metres above the village of Silandro, in the Monte Mezzodì district. The Schlandersburg central library has a lift and an accessible toilet; the third floor can only be reached by stairs.
