Nature Trails and the Madonie Landscape

In the area around Polizzi Generosa, numerous nature trails can be explored on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. One particularly clearly defined example is the Sentiero dell’aquila reale. The easy trail leads through the prairie of Piano Farina to the canyon of Fosso Canna. The canyon is designated as a nesting site.

In the Vallone Madonna degli Angeli near Polizzi Generosa, 25 specimens of Abies nebrodensis have been preserved in their original habitat. The Sentiero Abies nebrodensis leads through mixed woodland to the Anfiteatro di Quacella. Along the trail, the endemic plants of the Madonie and the population of Abies nebrodensis in the protected areas of Polizzi Generosa are the main focus.

Historic Centre and Sacred Buildings

A walk through the historic centre leads to preserved corners, squares, alleys and districts of Polizzi Generosa. Among the prominent buildings is the Chiesa Madre. It dates from the Norman period and is the town’s principal church. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie is also known as Badia Nuova; it was built in 1499 and completely remodelled in the 18th century. It houses Sicily’s largest sacred custodia. Pietro Bencivinni created it in the 17th century from gilded wood in the style of Spanish altarpieces.

Smaller architectural details are also worth examining closely. The Chiesa del Santo Spirito has a Gothic stone portal visible from the square of the same name. Only the ruins are freely accessible there; today, they house an unusual playground. Palazzo Gagliardo was built in the 16th century by the La Farina family and preserves the Mannerist style typical of eastern Sicily. On Via Carlo V, the palazzo has a Mannerist portal with carved masks as well as floral and animal motifs.

At Palazzo Carpinello, a monumental staircase leads upwards from Via Garibaldi. It is decorated with majolica vases depicting figures from the history of Polizzi. Casa Fondazione Giuseppe Antonio Borgese stands on the ruins of a 15th-century Dominican monastery. The Chiesa di San Gandolfo la Povera and the Collegio di Maria were built in 1622 to accommodate the confraternity of San Gandolfo. Both house a painting by Giuseppe Salerno from 1620 depicting the patronage of Saint Gandolfo.

Museums, Library and Places of Remembrance

The Civico Museo Archeologico Amedeo Tullio preserves finds dating from the 2nd to the 4th century BC. They were discovered in a Hellenistic necropolis above Polizzi Generosa. At the museum, you can see terracotta figurines, bronze objects, terracotta lamps and ceramic amphorae in the style of Magna Graecia. The Museo Etnoantropologico complements this archaeological focus with a permanent collection of historic objects, tools and everyday items. Reconstructed work and living areas show how this collection is presented.

A visit to Palazzo della Cultura includes part of the historic Biblioteca Duca Lancia di Brolo. The library contains 40,000 volumes, including old incunabula, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books, and numerous manuscripts. At Casa Fondazione Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, you can also explore an archive containing several editions of his works, first editions in various languages, manuscripts, correspondence, rare postcards and photographs. MAN_Museo Abiens Nebrodensis offers an immersive sensory exhibition in five thematic areas.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The events calendar is spread throughout the year. The Festa del Santissimo Crocifisso takes place every year from 1 May to 4 May in Polizzi Generosa and includes processions through the cobbled streets. The Festa di San Gandolfo takes place every year on the third Sunday in September and includes traditional music, concerts and fireworks. On the occasion of these celebrations, the complete „Sulle tracce di San Gandolfo“ circular route can be walked on the third weekend of September.

Other fixed dates focus on different themes. The Festa della Neve takes place every year on the third Sunday in July and includes the ascent to the high peaks of the Madonie. The Festa di Santa Lucia is celebrated in Polizzi Generosa on 12 and 13 December. On the eve, Cuccìa is traditionally prepared, a soup made from wheat, chickpeas and dried Badda beans, which are typical of the Polizzi area. The Sagra delle nocciole takes place in the second half of August and recreates scenes from rural and village life.

Ceramics and Regional Flavours

Polizzi Generosa is considered the oldest ceramics production site in the Madonie. A former brickworks was converted into an artistic ceramics workshop where young female decorators work. This theme can also be combined with the „Delizie nobiliari“ experience, which includes a palace tour and a tasting of local foods. In Polizzi, architecture, craftsmanship and regional cuisine thus come together without these offerings having to be combined into a single tour.
