Castelbuono in the Parco delle Madonie
Castelbuono is a medieval village in the Parco delle Madonie. Cultural attractions, trail routes, natural history collections and an annual festival offer visitors different points of interest for a trip.
The Castello dei Ventimiglia combines a cube-shaped form associated with Arab architecture, four square corner towers and battlements in the Norman style, as well as a cylindrical tower attributed to Swabian military architecture. The architectural references are therefore distributed across the building’s form, towers and battlements, rather than assigning the structure broadly to just one style.

Castello dei Ventimiglia and Museo Civico
The Castello dei Ventimiglia is home to the Museo Civico and is the cultural centre of the Madonie village. The Museo Civico is located in the heart of Castelbuono’s historic centre, inside the Castello dei Ventimiglia. Tours of the Museo Civico can be booked through Pro Loco Castelbuono; they are led by experienced members with deep local roots.
Getting to Castelbuono
By car, Castelbuono can be reached via the A20 Palermo–Messina motorway and the Pollina-Castelbuono exit; from there, a direct connection leads to the town centre. From Cefalù railway station, you can continue your journey to Castelbuono. Regular bus services operated by Sais Trasporti and AST run to Palermo and the main towns of the Madonie. For the journey, the road connection, onward travel from Cefalù and bus destinations can therefore be considered separately.
Via dei Frati and other trail routes
One stage of the Via dei Frati begins at Piazza Margherita in Castelbuono, follows Via Isnello downhill and reaches the S.P. 9. The Castelbuono–Cefalù stage of the Via dei Frati includes Castelbuono, Isnello, the Santuario Gibilmanna and Cefalù. The Sentiero degli Agrifogli giganti di Piano Pomo is easily accessible from Piano Sempria-Castelbuono. Here, the term stage refers to one section of a longer trail.

Natural History Collections
The Museo Naturalistico Francesco MinĂ Palumbo contains collections covering flora, fauna, geology, prehistory and industrial archaeology, as well as several collections donated by other naturalists. Flora and fauna represent the plant and animal worlds; geology, prehistory and industrial archaeology broaden the natural history perspective to include the history of the Earth, early human history and human production.
Ypsigrock Festival in Castelbuono
The Ypsigrock Festival takes place in Castelbuono every year. The event lasts four days, during which participants come together with the Castelbuono community. The main stage is located in Piazza Castello, where international artists perform in a natural amphitheatre.
Manna from the local ash trees
Manna obtained from Castelbuono’s local ash trees is used as a sweetener, for detoxification, and in medicine and cosmetics. The substance therefore combines a local origin with several different areas of use.
