Culture in Ragalna

The Chiesa Madre di Maria SS. del Carmelo is located in Piazza Cisterna and is the most important religious building in the town of Ragalna. The cistern in Piazza Cisterna is an old water reservoir used to collect rainwater.

The Santa Barbara votive chapel in Contrada Monte Marzo contains a bas-relief commissioned by Pietro Scuderi and a cross, both created by the sculptor Barbaro Messina. The Chiesa Madonna delle Nevi features architecture reminiscent of the structural elements of a typical Tyrolean mountain hut. Large wooden roof surfaces, a canopy and a striking stained-glass window emphasize its stylistic appeal.

The Madonna del Carmelo patronal festival in Ragalna is celebrated on the last Sunday and Monday of September. It includes processions and a concluding fireworks display on Monday evening.

Trails on Mount Etna

Sentiero 785 connects the inhabited area of Ragalna with the network of hiking trails on Mount Etna created by Parco dell’Etna and reaches the Pista Altomontana dell’Etna. The Pista Altomontana dell’Etna is the main trail in the Mount Etna hiking network; hikers can continue exploring the mountain area along this trail.

Sentiero Monte Nero degli Zappini is an approximately 4-kilometre circular trail within a state-owned forest area. The trail in Parco dell’Etna near Ragalna passes through old and recent lava fields, lava-flow caves, hornitos, as well as natural and cultivated woodland formations.

Volcanic Landscapes

The Nuova Gussonea Botanical Garden represents the ecosystems typical of Mount Etna, including the unique ecosystems of the high-altitude areas. In the botanical garden, visitors can observe plant communities that do not occur along the trail.

The landscape of Piano Vetore combines vegetation with black lava rock shaped by ancient eruptions. Piano Vetore serves as a starting point for various hikes. From Piano Vetore, visitors can explore different areas of Mount Etna.

Special Experiences

At the M.G. Fracastoro site in Contrada Serra la Nave on Mount Etna, guided tours are offered by prior reservation. The tours include a visit to a telescope and the observation of one or more astronomical objects.

The EtnAvventura Serra la Nave adventure park is located in Contrada Serra la Nave in Ragalna, on the Nicolosi–Rifugio Sapienza side at the foot of Mount Etna.

Culinary Traditions

Traditional dishes from Ragalna include salsiccia with caliceddi, a wild-growing vegetable. Etna wine and chestnuts are among the culinary traditions associated with Ragalna. Enoteca dell’Etna offers the bookable tasting experience “Iemu Spizzicannu”. The tasting introduces visitors to the traditions of Ragalna and provides information about the Arena family and the Palmento Arena complex.
