Avellino lies in a basin bordered by the Monti Picentini. One of the area's most distinctive natural features is the Geosito della Mefite in the Valle d'Ansanto, where gas emissions cause the lake's sulfurous water to bubble up. The Mefite's emissions affect vegetation within a radius of three kilometers.
Nature
The Monte Vergine and Monte Vallatrone, both mountains, are located in the area around Avellino. The Parco Regionale dei Monti Picentini protects an ecosystem with beech forests, rare orchids and golden eagles. Trails through this area pass through beech forests, follow streams and lead to viewpoints. One specific mountain route is CAI trail 101, the “L'alta via dei Monti Picentini,” which leads to the 1,806-meter summit of Monte Terminio.
The wider regional area around Avellino is home to the Santuario di Montevergine. Built in 1126, the monastery complex is located at an altitude of 1,270 meters. It can be reached on foot from Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo or by funicular from Mercogliano.
Culture
Several museums and historic sites are located in the immediate surroundings of Avellino. The Carcere Borbonico is a museum and served as a prison until 1987. The Museo Irpino is also a museum; its archaeological materials are arranged chronologically from prehistory to the late Roman period and retain their original context of origin. The Museo Civico di Villa Amendola presents a permanent, narrative and chronological exhibition on the history of Avellino in five interconnected halls. It spans the feudal rule of the Caracciolo princely family from 1589 to 1806 through to the earthquake of November 23, 1980. The collection includes one of only two known self-portraits by Cosimo Fanzago in the world. Also on permanent display are three bronze rosettes and three bronze lilies from a Baroque tower pinnacle.
Avellino Cathedral was built in 1132 at the initiative of Bishop Roberto. Its Romanesque crypt dates from around the 6th century AD. It has three naves divided by 14 different stone columns. The Abbazia del Goleto is also located in the province of Avellino. It was built in 1133 at the initiative of Saint William of Vercelli for a community of monks and nuns. The complex preserves superimposed medieval spaces in Romanesque and Gothic styles.
History
The Archaeological Park of Aeclanum in the province of Avellino covers approximately 18 hectares. It preserves the remains of a city founded by the Samnite Hirpini and later conquered by Rome. The Cippus Abellanus, an inscription in the Oscan language dated to around 150 BC, was found in the ruins of the Castello di Avella. The Archaeological Area of Avella also contains a Roman amphitheater built during the late Republican period in the 1st century BC.
