Celano between the Historic Trail, Gorge and Mountain Panorama

Celano combines a signposted historic trail with a striking gorge, mountain panoramas and numerous sites of cultural and historical significance. If you would like to plan your trip around different interests, you will find clearly distinguishable focal points here: the Celano Historic Trail offers three routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels, while Le Gole di Celano combines an experience of nature with access regulations that must be carefully observed. The townscape is complemented by churches, archaeological evidence and the Serra di Celano.

Historic trails with varying levels of difficulty

The Celano Historic Trail is divided into a short, medium and long route. The three variants have different difficulty levels, thereby enabling a graduated approach to planning. This is particularly interesting if not all travellers have the same stamina or the same expectations of a trail. The route along the trail is marked with red-and-white colour markings and hand-carved wooden signs.

The remains of the fortification walls that once protected the castle of medieval Celano are also incorporated into the route of the Celano Historic Trail. The trail therefore leads not only through the present-day town, but also past visible traces of its medieval history. A sport-climbing wall is located within the Sentiero Storico di Celano and the Sentiero Storico di Federico II. This is intended for visitors who would like to complement walking with another sporting activity during their stay.

Le Gole di Celano: Gorge, trails and reservations

Le Gole di Celano is a gorge in the central Apennines between Celano, Aielli and Ovindoli. In some places, the rock walls are about 2 m apart and reach heights of up to 200 m at their highest point. These unusual dimensions shape the character of the natural area and make it clear that this is not merely a short walking route within the town area.

The gorge offers opportunities for walking, trekking and outdoor excursions. The path through Le Gole di Celano leads to the section known as Fonte degli Innamorati. For planning purposes, it is also important to note that access is limited to a free online reservation from 24 May to 31 October. This period and the reservation requirement should therefore be taken into account when organising your trip if you would like to visit the gorge.

Cultural sites from antiquity to church history

The Collezione Torlonia in Castello Piccolomini preserves 184 objects and 344 Roman bronze coins. Paludi di Celano represents a different historical focus: the settlement is a prehistoric pile-dwelling village that has been excavated more extensively than any other in Abruzzo. Its dating ranges from the 17th to the 10th century BC. In Celano, you can therefore encounter both Roman collections and very early traces of settlement.

Santa Maria Valleverde has a library containing around 100,000 old volumes. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista preserves clearly visible 15th-century frescoes by artists of the Sienese school, including the Madonna con Bambino rampante by Andrea De Litio. The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie is considered the only place spared during the siege by Emperor Frederick II and the subsequent destruction of old Celano in 1223.

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo – Chiesa di Sant’Angelo – is also one of the town’s religious cultural sites. A relic of Pope Celestine V is kept there. Together with the frescoes, the library, the collection in Castello Piccolomini and the prehistoric pile-dwelling village, it creates a broad cultural spectrum that can be explored independently of any single attraction.

Mountain landscape and natural surroundings around Celano

Serra di Celano is a 1,930 m-high mountain behind Celano in the Marsica. From there, a 360° panorama extends across the entire Fucino Plain and the surrounding mountain ranges of Majella, Velino, Gran Sasso and the Monti Simbruini. For trip planning, this mountain therefore provides a clear landscape reference point that relates the plain to several mountain ranges.

The municipality of Celano lies partly within the boundaries of Parco Regionale Sirente-Velino. The Sorgente dei Santi Martiri is also located within the town, a historic spring from which fresh, clear water flows. These two destinations complement the gorge and Serra with different nature themes: one concerns a protected landscape area, while the other is a historic spring in Celano.
