Cered is located in the northeastern corner of Nógrád County and on the Hungarian-Slovakian border. The Medves hills and forests are a protected natural area because of their diverse geological formations and rare plant and animal species. From the surrounding hills, views extend to the peaks of Medves and Szilvás-kő as well as the Mátra, Bükk and Tátra mountain ranges – for a large part of the year.

Landscape

Geď is located in the immediate vicinity of Cered. Szilvás-kő, Nagy-kő and Medves are situated in the surrounding area. The Tarna rises west of Cered at the foot of the Medves Mountains and crosses the village from east to west. The lakes of the Pípó stream are considered a regional asset; visitors can fish there.

Culture

Cered has a Baroque Roman Catholic church built between 1755 and 1762. Next to it stands a protected bell tower with a wooden shingle roof dating from the 18th century, regarded as an example of folk architecture.

The village is also home to an annual international artists’ camp, a women’s choir dedicated to preserving the Palóc heritage and a folk embroiderer. The Ceredi International Contemporary Art Colony has been active for more than thirty years; its programme includes exhibitions, studio visits and the permanent exhibition Múzeum ’80.

Transport

Cered has public bus services but no railway line; public transport is described as infrequent and expensive. The route from Salgótarján to Cered is considered a winding road with panoramic views.
