Komorn-Gran: Danube, Pilis and Esztergom Basilica

Komorn-Gran refers to the Hungarian county of Komárom-Esztergom in the Central Transdanubia region; in the north, its border follows the Danube and separates the county from Slovakia. For winter-oriented travel planning, this geographical classification provides the initial framework; the landscape, culture and hiking each set different priorities within it.

Geographical setting

The area includes the landscapes of Pilis, Vértes, Gerecse and Bakonyalja, as well as the Danube Valley and Kisalföld. The Esztergom Basilica complex is part of the regional heritage. It was built in the first half of the 19th century on the site of Hungary's first cathedral and is the 18th-largest basilica in the world. The complex combines a specific period of construction with a site of particular importance to the history of Hungarian cathedrals.

The basilica houses the preserved Bakócz Chapel, a chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen containing relics and jewellery, as well as a treasury with medieval goldsmith's work and historic textiles. Within the same building, architectural history, sacred spaces, precious objects and textile artefacts stand side by side. The various elements make the complex legible both as a building and as a collection of historic interiors and objects.
