Heckengereuth was first mentioned in a document in 1354 and lies at an elevation of 409 metres right beside Lake Ratscher. This means that both the town’s history and its direct connection to the lake are relevant when planning your stay. The surrounding area also offers watersports and a bathing beach. The village festival, held in July, is celebrated together with the Country Festival by the lake.

Local history and lakeside location

The first documented mention of Heckengereuth dates back to 1354. This provides a historical reference for the town, but it is not a founding date. Together with the elevation of 409 metres, it describes Heckengereuth from two different perspectives: its documented history and its location. Its immediate connection to Lake Ratscher is particularly striking.

When deciding what to focus on during your stay, you can keep these aspects distinct: Heckengereuth itself offers a historical connection and lies directly beside the lake; additional leisure activities are available in the surrounding area. This allows you to take the town’s location and your interest in excursions into account when planning your trip, without treating them as the same thing.

Watersports and bathing beach at Lake Ratscher

In the area around Heckengereuth, Lake Ratscher offers more than 100 hectares of water for watersports. There is a sailing school and a surfing school there. If you would like to include lessons in your trip plans, check in advance whether they are currently being offered.

Lake Ratscher is also home to a 500-metre-long bathing beach, described as the longest in the region. Its length and this distinction make the beach a specific point of reference when planning a stay by the water. Check this information before your trip if needed. The lake, schools and beach are amenities in the surrounding area; they do not necessarily describe features of an accommodation.

Village festival in July and Country Festival

The village festival in Heckengereuth takes place in July and is celebrated together with the Country Festival by the lake. The festival brings together an event in the town and the festival by the lake; the Country Festival is described as Germany’s largest. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the latest dates in advance. This lets you take the date into account when choosing your stay, without assuming that the tradition described guarantees specific events in this year’s programme.

More culture in the wider destination of Schleusingen

Schleusingen also offers its own historical and cultural points of interest. Bertholdsburg Castle in Schleusingen is a Renaissance building flanked by four towers and featuring magnificent portals. The castle was the seat of the Counts of Henneberg until 1583. Today, it houses the Natural History Museum. Its three major exhibitions cover nearly 2,000 square metres in the castle’s east, north and west wings.

Highlights of the museum exhibition include the skeletons of South Thuringian dinosaurs measuring 5 to 6 metres in length. Exhibition details may change; check current visitor information before your visit. Another distinctive feature of Schleusingen is the market square in the centre: lime trees line it, and the market fountain, dating from 1710, bears a statue of Countess Elisabeth of Henneberg.

Schleusingen’s town festival also includes the Abitaufe, held annually on the penultimate weekend before the summer holidays. Graduates of the Hennebergisches Gymnasium “Georg Ernst” are pulled through town in brightly decorated handcarts and then ceremonially baptised, after Countess Elisabeth’s face on the market fountain has been veiled. This is a tradition specific to Schleusingen and adds to the history of Heckengereuth without being a feature of the town itself.
