Culture and History
The old Roman road that forms the boundary between Niederweiler and Laufersweiler and Krummenau is also called the Ausonius Trail. Prehistoric and Roman burial mounds are located along Ausoniusstraße in the Niederweiler area.
A Hallstatt-period wagon grave dating from 600 to 500 BC was discovered in one of these burial mounds. It is probably the grave of a Celtic prince. The same burial mound also contained a later Roman secondary burial.
In 1926, a Roman complex was excavated in Niederweiler, apparently a funerary monument on extensive foundations dating from the 2nd century, with a balustrade enclosure. Some of the excavation finds from Niederweiler are housed in the Landesmuseum Bonn.
The Catholic St. Bartholomew Chapel is a replacement building dating from 1914 to 1919. A bell from 1756, originating from a former chapel, hangs in the bell tower of the community centre. The St. Bartholomew fair has been held annually since 1990.
The listed half-timbered complex at Hauptstraße 8/10 comprises a semi-detached house from the 18th century and a half-timbered barn marked “1888”.
