Ulmen: Hotels and Accommodation

Ulmen is shaped by two volcanic maar lakes: the Jungferweiher and the centrally located Ulmen Maar. Both bodies of water give the town a distinctive landscape profile.

Nature

The Jungferweiher is considered the oldest and largest volcanic crater in the Eifel. At the same time, it is a nature and bird sanctuary home to rare bird and plant species. The centrally located Ulmen Maar is considered the youngest maar in the Eifel and is 37 metres deep.

The Ulmen Maar Tunnel is a 126-metre-long tunnel connecting the Ulmen Maar with the Jungferweiher. You can walk through it independently and without protective equipment, seeing sediment layers and a geological exhibition chamber along the way. The step-free entrance is on the Jungferweiher side.

Culture

The ruins of a crusader castle dating from the 11th century overlook the Ulmen Maar. From there, you can enjoy a view of St Matthias Parish Church and Ulmen.

A smartphone-guided discovery tour connects the maar tunnel, the Ulmen Maar, the Jungferweiher and the castle via QR code pick-up points, short videos and a children's quiz. The route is 3.7 kilometres long and takes around 2.5 hours, including walking times and stops.
