Nature
The challenging circular route “Natursteig Sieg | Stage 10 | Around Wissen” is approximately 25 kilometres long and starts and ends at Wissen railway station. The route runs along field, forest and meadow paths, passes through idyllic stream valleys and offers wide-ranging views.
The Auenlandweg trail passes through woodland and meadow landscapes, follows the Firzelsbach stream and runs along paths above the Sieg. Along a hiking trail of around 500 metres, the Köttingsbach tree educational trail presents a total of 22 trees.
Wissen’s RegioBahnhof is designated as an award-winning hiking railway station and connects several hiking opportunities with public transport. By bicycle, the “Nister Flitzer” tour leads from Wissen along the Nister to the Weltendepfad trail, through the Kroppach Switzerland region and across a suspension bridge near Helmeroth. The “Stille Post” cycling tour, on the other hand, follows a former mine railway line through an area shaped by past iron ore mining.
Culture
The preserved interior decoration of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is considered Peter Hecker’s largest surviving work of art. The oldest inventory item in the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a baptismal font from the 13th century.
The guided Chapel Trail is a hike of approximately four kilometres that takes around two and a half hours. It begins at the Tourist Information office in Wissen’s RegioBahnhof and leads to Schönstein Castle, its castle chapel and the Heister Chapel. The Heister Chapel and the castle chapel in Wissen-Schönstein can only be accessed as part of this guided Chapel Trail. The Heister Chapel was built in 1714 and is considered one of the oldest half-timbered chapels in Rhineland-Palatinate. Schönstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1255 and stands on a rock at the confluence of the Elbbach and Sieg rivers. The castle is inhabited, so its interior cannot be visited.
Another guided walking tour, lasting approximately two hours, leads through the town centre. It starts at the Tourist Information office in the RegioBahnhof and combines industrial history with religious and civic history. The route includes kulturWERKwissen, a former mining-industrial site now used for art and culture, as well as the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Marktstube, the Steinbuschanlage, directors’ residences, the Germania Hotel and Gerichtsstraße.
