Culture and History
Wildenburg was the principal residence of the Lords of Wildenburg. Gerhard of Arenberg was associated with the castle and referred to himself as “Gerardus de Wildenberg” in 1239.
Crottorf Castle is considered the only moated castle complex of its kind in the northeast of Rhineland-Palatinate and one of the best-preserved moated castles in the Rhineland. Crottorf was first documented in 1144 as “Crutorp”.
St. Anne’s Chapel was built by Franciscan monks in the 17th century. It stands at a site connected with the history of the witch trials at Wildenburg and is also known locally as the Red Chapel. St. Roch’s Chapel was probably built by Franciscans in the 17th century and consists of a square, plastered rubble-stone building with a Welsch hood.
Landscape and Trails
Crottorf Moated Castle is located in the Wildenburger Land region. This is considered a natural and undeveloped landscape.
The Westerwald Loop leads from Wissen to Daaden and reaches Crottorf Moated Castle via the historic Wildenburger Land region. The Hexenweg trail can be accessed directly in Friesenhagen at the corner of Hauptstraße and Klosterstraße.
