Grund offers several clearly distinct ways to combine your stay with culture, hiking, a short adventure trail and a free facility in the Insbach Valley. Ginsburg Castle represents history and panoramic views, the Jung-Stilling Circular Trail offers a longer hike around Hilchenbach-Grund, while the Knights’ Trail and the forest nature trail provide opportunities for shorter outings.

History and views at Ginsburg Castle

Ginsburg Castle was built in the 12th century as a Nassau border fortress. Ginsburg Castle is also a local excursion destination in Grund. The platform of the reconstructed keep offers extensive panoramic views.

The Jung-Stilling Room is also part of Ginsburg Castle. Simple instruments can be seen there that are associated with Jung-Stilling’s eye operations according to the Daviel method.

The Jung-Stilling Circular Trail around Hilchenbach-Grund

The Jung-Stilling Circular Trail leads around Hilchenbach-Grund, uphill to Ginsberger Heide and the ruins of Ginsburg Castle. It then passes the customs post and continues into the Insbach Valley to a Kneipp footbath.

The circular hiking trail is 10.2 kilometres long, takes around three hours and includes 268 metres of ascent. The approximate duration and elevation gain are particularly helpful for planning when you want to combine a longer hike with additional excursion destinations. The circular trail starts at the “Alte Kapellenschule” village community centre in Hilchenbach-Grund. This starting point provides clear orientation within the village.

Shorter routes for children and accompanying adults

The Knights’ Trail at Ginsburg Castle is designed as an easy, 0.4-kilometre adventure footpath and is an excursion destination in Grund. It is aimed at children and their accompanying adults. This clearly distinguishes it from the longer Jung-Stilling Circular Trail: the short route offers its own child-focused excursion setting, while the circular trail, with its length, duration and elevation gain, represents a more extensive hike.

There is also an approximately 2-kilometre-long forest nature trail in the area around Ginsburg Castle. Its approximate length lies between the short Knights’ Trail and the 10.2-kilometre circular hiking trail. This provides another opportunity to complement a stay in Grund with a shorter walk through the forest. The three routes differ in length and character, allowing you to better adapt your planned outing to the time available and the composition of your group.

Kneipp footbath in the Insbach Valley

The Kneipp footbath in the Insbach Valley is located at the entrance to Grund and has seating. It can be used free of charge. As the destination of the Jung-Stilling Circular Trail, it is also situated along the route through the Insbach Valley. The seating provides an additional place to stop and relax, while free use allows visitors to enjoy it without admission costs. For a group with different interests, the footbath can therefore serve as an independent stopping point along the circular route.

Choose accommodation based on your own excursion plans

The Knights’ Trail covers 0.4 kilometres and is easy, the forest nature trail is approximately 2 kilometres long, and the Jung-Stilling Circular Trail covers 10.2 kilometres, takes around three hours and includes 268 metres of ascent.
