If you would like to assess Niedersfeld for a stay involving skiing, cross-country skiing, winter trails and family outings, you will find several clearly distinguishable focal points. The family ski school, the cross-country trails, the high heath, Hillebachsee Lake and the paths through the Neuer Hagen natural area appeal to different day plans. This allows you to weigh up for your trip whether alpine courses, endurance on groomed circuits, activity in the landscape or shared time away from skiing should take priority.

Winter activities ranging from alpine ski courses to cross-country skiing

The Niedersfeld family ski school offers alpine ski courses for children and adults aged 4 and over.

The two circuits differ significantly for cross-country skiing. The Hochheide trail is a circuit approximately 5 km long at an altitude of about 800 m. The Hilletal trail is a 6 km circuit around Hillebachsee Lake and through the Hilletal valley. The section of the Hilletal trail around Hillebachsee Lake is illuminated, making cross-country skiing possible even after dark. For groups with different interests, this separation can be helpful: while the alpine ski course sets a fixed focus, the trails offer their own route options with different lengths and landscape settings.

Hochheide and Neuer Hagen as natural areas

The high heath near Niedersfeld extends along the upper slope of the Langenberg massif on the border with Hesse at an altitude of over 800 m. This elevation is a defining characteristic of the landscape, without alone permitting any statement about snow reliability or the conditions on individual winter days.

The heathland and moorland biotopes of Neuer Hagen are a habitat of significance throughout the state, with numerous endangered animal and plant species. Every year, a herd of Heidschnucken sheep and goats roams the Niedersfeld high heath area. This opens up a nature-oriented perspective on the high heath that goes beyond winter sports while remaining connected to the area's special character.

The ascent to the high heath begins directly in the center of Niedersfeld at the B 480. The Golden Path is an approximately 5 km-long, free circular hiking trail across the Niedersfeld high heath with 10 stations. Access is signposted in the center of Niedersfeld at the B 480; a free car park is available there.

Hillebachsee Lake: activities and family outings

Hillebachsee Lake near Niedersfeld is an 8.5-hectare reservoir in the Rothaar Mountains. The lake has a bathing bay, a water-skiing facility, a fitness trail, a playground, a beach volleyball court and a multifunctional grass pitch.

A 1.6 km-long asphalt circular path around the lake is suitable for cycling, inline skating and jogging, as well as for family outings. Especially for a travel group in which not everyone takes part in the same winter sport, this circular path can be included in the day's itinerary as an independent option.

Hiking routes with different focal points

The Rothaarsteig trail from Brilon via Winterberg to Dillenburg also passes over the Niedersfeld high heath.

The Hochheide winter hiking trail is a circular route through the Neuer Hagen nature reserve with a scenic detour to Clemensberg. The Golden Path and the Hochheide winter hiking trail thus remain two independent circular routes with their own courses.

Culture and distinctive natural formations

The house at Stammecke 6 is dated to 1652 and is presumably the oldest house in the Winterberg municipal area. Kreuzberg/RĂĽtzen is designated as a natural monument with rock formations.
