Hiking and Trails

The EifelSchleifen also run through the municipality; these are circular hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty. A 13.5-kilometer circular trail around Lake Olef is suitable for hiking and cycling. Swimming and water sports are not permitted in Lake Olef because the lake is used as a drinking-water reservoir.

The Castles Route begins in Hellenthal below the Olef Dam and continues to the ruins of Reifferscheid and Wildenburg. The municipality is also home to the Weißer Stein observation tower: It is 30 meters high, situated at an elevation of 720 meters, and reached via 147 steps.

Culture and History

Within the municipality, Reifferscheid Castle comprises a castle ruin, an outer bailey, and a fortified settlement; the complex is freely accessible. Reifferscheid was first documented in 1106. The historic townscape preserves half-timbered houses and old lanes with a medieval character.

Grube Wohlfahrt is a visitor mine that conveys the history of mining from the late Middle Ages through the 19th and into the early 20th century. The Tiefen Stollen and its side galleries form a visitor mine route extending for approximately 900 meters. Within the municipality, an above-ground mining educational trail and the EifelSchleife Bergbaupfad offer hiking opportunities around Grube Wohlfahrt.

Nature

Around 56 hectares within the municipality are located in Eifel National Park. These include beech and oak forests, stream valleys, and rocky terrain. The Rur-Olef Route runs through deciduous forests, meadows, fields, rocky sections, streams, and open landscapes on the ridges of Eifel National Park.

Hellenthal has a bird-of-prey station and a wildlife enclosure. There, visitors can encounter birds of prey and native wildlife, as well as take part in informative guided tours and flight demonstrations.
