Mützenich: Steling, Hiking Trails and Village Museum
Accommodation in Mützenich
Mützenich combines scenic landmarks, hiking trails, village culture and the Vennbahn-Rur Route. Around Mützenich and in the village itself, you will find the Steling, Circular Hiking Trail 36, Kaiser Karl’s Bed, the “Uraalt Scholl” village museum and St. Bartholomew’s Church. The Steling and the circular hiking trail are connected to the Eifelsteig; the museum and church are located in Mützenich. The Vennbahn-Rur Route passes through the village on a cycling tour between Monschau and Sourbrodt.
The Steling: 658 Metres and the Eifelsteig
The Steling in Monschau-Mützenich is 658 metres above sea level and is also the highest elevation in the Aachen urban region. On the second stage of the long-distance Eifelsteig hiking trail, the Steling marks the highest point.
From the “Im Brand” hiking car park in Monschau-Mützenich, the “Steling” signposting leads to the Steling. The route therefore begins at a clearly designated starting point, and the signs bear the same name as the destination.
Circular Hiking Trail 36 between the Village Square and the Fens
The 11.4-kilometre Circular Hiking Trail 36 begins at the village square in Mützenich. One section follows the Eifelsteig, leads to the edge of the Mützenich Fens and includes a picnic area at the former German-Belgian customs station. The route is therefore designed as a complete circuit; its Eifelsteig section is limited to one part of the trail. For planning a complete loop, the 11.4 kilometres and the start at the village square are the key details.
In the vicinity of Mützenich, Hiking Route 36 passes very close to Reichenstein Abbey. The abbey is a building dating from the 12th century. The route then reaches the Vennbahn, a cycling route.
Kaiser Karl’s Bed at the Border
Kaiser Karl’s Bed is a rock near Mützenich, directly on the German-Belgian border. In the High Fens, Kaiser Karl’s Bed is now especially popular with hikers as a picnic area with a small shelter and several seats around the rock.
Village Museum and Church in Mützenich
The “Uraalt Scholl” village museum is located in a former school building in Mützenich and can be visited by appointment. Inside, you can see rustic rooms with antique furniture and stuffed animals. The exhibition also includes numerous agricultural implements. An appointment is therefore required when planning a museum visit. The exhibition thus ranges from furnished rooms to agricultural equipment.
St. Bartholomew’s Church is also one of Mützenich’s local landmarks. It was consecrated in 1850.
The Vennbahn-Rur Route for Cycling Tours
The Vennbahn-Rur Route passes through Mützenich on a cycling tour between Monschau and Sourbrodt. The Vennbahn is a cycling route, while Circular Trail 36 is a hiking route.
