Weißenborn combines a distinctive natural landscape with cultural and historical trails and clearly differentiated excursion destinations. Around the village, you will encounter the “Kalkberg bei Weißenborn” FFH area, the Cultural-Historical Hiking Trail, the Rotkäppchenland railway cycle path and several historic landmarks. This allows you to shape your stay according to your interests: with a guided hike, a geocaching tour, a cycling trip or a visit to the church and the Brothers Grimm ancestral home.

Nature on the northern edge of the village

The “Kalkberg bei Weißenborn” FFH area is located within the municipality of Ottrau, directly on the northern edge of the village of Weißenborn. Its precise location makes Kalkberg a clearly identifiable natural feature within the village, without requiring a broader geographical designation. Anyone wishing to combine nature with a connection to the village during a stay in Weißenborn will find a specific point of interest here.

The area covers 18.51 hectares. This manageable size distinguishes Kalkberg from an expansive landscape region. At the same time, Kalkberg is defined not only by its location but also by its landscape: it is a south-facing limestone slope with juniper and orchids.

The combination of limestone slope, juniper and orchids gives the FFH area a distinctive character. For you, this primarily means a specific natural setting that complements Weißenborn’s other themes without being equated with the Cultural-Historical Hiking Trail or the historic buildings.

Hiking with history and playful stations

Guided hikes are offered on the Cultural-Historical Hiking Trail in Weißenborn. Depending on the scope of the booking, fairytale costumed performers appear at eight stations, including a Goose Girl with real geese.

Another option is the 4.6-kilometre multi-geocaching tour along the Cultural-Historical Hiking Trail. It takes around two hours and starts at the Brothers Grimm ancestral home at Lindenstraße 5. If you would like to combine a walk with a playful challenge, this tour is clearly different from a guided hike with performers.

The Rotkäppchenland railway cycle path

The Rotkäppchenland railway cycle path passes Weißenborn, where the Brothers Grimm ancestral home is located. It also follows the route of the former Knüllwaldbahn railway.

With a maximum gradient of 2.8 percent, the railway cycle path is easy to ride and is also suitable for family outings. Its low maximum gradient is a specific difference compared with the hiking options: on the railway cycle path, the focus is on riding along a former railway line, while the Cultural-Historical Hiking Trail is associated with guided stations and geocaching.

The church and ancestral home as historic destinations

The church in Weißenborn preserves several phases of construction. Its oldest sections are Romanesque; the church was remodelled in the Baroque period.

A bronze plaque at the Brothers Grimm ancestral home commemorates the original appearance of the former half-timbered house.
