Castle history and insights into the Hinterland region
Landgrave’s Castle in Biedenkopf was built in the mid-15th century by Henry III of Hesse-Marburg and is one of the State of Hesse’s significant cultural monuments. The Hinterland Museum is housed in the castle. Founded in 1908 as a regional museum, it focuses on the regional and cultural history of the Hinterland. Its main themes include industry, transport, agriculture and crafts, as well as traditional dress, housing and everyday culture.
An architectural history tour takes you through the entire castle and explains the building’s distinctive features. A guided tour of Hessian architectural history uses Biedenkopf as an example and also introduces you to how to read a Central Hessian half-timbered house. It lasts about two hours. Arrange seasonal Sunday tours with the guide, and check the latest dates for the castle tour as well.
Half-timbered architecture and culture in Biedenkopf
In Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen stands the Schartenhof, which is over 300 years old and is one of the region’s historically significant half-timbered buildings. Today, it is a hub for creativity and a home for art, culture and music. The Schartenhof also has a puppet theatre that stages classic operas. Check performance dates in advance.
The Schenkbarsche House also shows how a building’s history can be read in its structure. The five-storey half-timbered building has two lower floors dating from 1491; Amtmann Schenkbar had the three upper floors added in 1610. By appointment, this private museum opens the interior of Biedenkopf’s oldest house and its collection of icons to visitors. There are no regular opening hours.
Sackpfeife: trails and views
The Sackpfeife is Biedenkopf’s local mountain. Three circular hiking trails of varying lengths start at the large car park. This gives you several route options, though there is no single walking time that applies to all of them. Check the conditions for your chosen route before setting out.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Tower marks the highest point of the Sackpfeife. From its viewing platform, the panoramic view extends across the ridges of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park and the Marburg region. A viewpoint on the Sackpfeife also offers views across the ridges of the Slate Mountains and the Marburg Hills; on clear days, the view reaches as far as the Taunus. If the views are especially important to you, you can include both of these described vantage points in your plans.
Perfstausee: activities and protected habitat
The Perfstausee is in the Breidenstein district of Biedenkopf. Non-motorised boats and stand-up paddleboards can be used on the lake. On shore, there is a beach volleyball court and a disc golf course. The lake is also at the intersection of numerous regional and long-distance cycling routes, making it a popular destination for bike rides.
Alongside the leisure activities, nature conservation is also part of the lake area: one section is part of the “Im Wehr bei Breidenstein” nature reserve, which provides protected habitat particularly for waterbirds. When planning your visit, keep in mind these two different aspects of the Perfstausee: activities on and by the water, and an area protected as a habitat for waterbirds.
Festivals and the wider region
The Grenzgang festival is celebrated in Biedenkopf every seven years. This three-day event takes place at historic forest sites and brings locals and visitors together. If you’d like to plan your trip around the event, check the date of the next edition rather than inferring a specific year from the interval.
In Biedenkopf-Kombach, games held at the site by the shelter draw on the true story of the Kombach post robbers. To take part, contact the organiser to make arrangements.
