Oberreifenberg offers a ski lift for skiers and snowboarders, as well as cross-country ski trails, sledding hills and an ice stock sport facility. Numerous hiking trails and Reifenberg Castle add trails and architectural history to the range of activities. The local offerings provide several specific options to explore.

Winter Activities

The Oberreifenberg ski lift is suitable for skiers and snowboarders. Cross-country ski trails offer another form of winter sport; sledding hills and the ice stock sport facility round out the winter activities. These differences can help you decide: you can make the lift your main focus or consider other forms of winter sport as well. If you are planning specific travel dates, check the ski lift’s current operating information in advance.

Castle, Church and Architectural History

The ruins of Oberreifenberg Castle are the highest-altitude medieval castle in the Taunus Mountains. The surviving structures include a tall, round keep from the 13th century, a shield wall from the 14th century, remains of the fortifications and a residential tower with a viewing platform. The keep and shield wall point to different construction phases. The ruins also include a church cellar and a shield wall about four metres thick, with round towers. This means you can see more of the former fortifications on site than just the keep. The grounds of Reifenberg Castle are freely accessible; check access before your visit.

Beneath the ruins stands Bassenheim Palace. St. George’s Parish Church was built in Oberreifenberg between 1845 and 1855 to replace the church that had previously stood on the castle grounds. The architectural history therefore ranges from medieval fortification remains to a 19th-century church. St. Gertrudis Chapel, a listed cultural monument in the Taunus, is picturesquely situated above the Oberreifenberg district in Schmitten im Taunus. According to the municipality, the mortal remains of the Reifenberg knights are in Gertrudis Chapel. The chapel therefore adds another connection to local history to a visit to the castle.

Hiking Trails and Routes

Numerous hiking trails complement the winter activities. The regular Waldgeister circular trail follows the Krötenbach stream uphill to Oberreifenberg and the Pfarrheckenfeld car park. The trail offers a panorama of Oberreifenberg and its castle. The route thus connects named waypoints with a view of the town and its landmark structure.

The challenging TaunusRunde Höhenluft calls for a different kind of planning: using an e-bike is recommended for this route. The useful points of reference differ when comparing the two routes: the Waldgeister circular trail is defined by its course and castle panorama, while the TaunusRunde Höhenluft is characterized by its challenging rating and e-bike recommendation. The TaunusRunde starts at the outdoor swimming pool in Schmitten, the larger municipality, so the starting point is not immediately next to every accommodation in Oberreifenberg. This distinction matters when planning how to reach the route.
